Readers Questions and Answers

This week I will again answer some of the mail that I have been receiving recently in the hope that it will resolve a number of problems that my readers have been having.

What is the intended function of the Wingdings option which comes up on my old Word 97 choice of fonts?

Someone drew my attention to the weird link you get with recent tragic events in New York by keying in the characters 33QNY in Wingdings bold face at maximum size (26) which brings up a print line of symbols resembling from the left, twin towers, an airplane in flight, a skull and crossbones and lastly, the star of Israel.I see that Wingdings 2 and 3 bring up another range of symbols.

Would be interested to have your comments.Ron Abbotts, Torquay

The Wingdings font isn’t just something that is exclusive to Microsoft Word 97 and in many instances 26 isn’t the maximum font size.As far as I’m aware, the intended function of the Wingdings font is to allow the user to insert special characters into any document and it’s just a coincidence that by typing in 33QNY you can create something related to the terrible atrocities that happened in America just recently.

An example of more helpful use of the Wingdings font is if you go to ‘Start’, ‘Run’ and then type in ‘Charmap’ into the dialog box that pops up and select ‘OK’ you are then able to browse through the selection of special characters that you can insert into your documents using Wingdings or any other font on your PC.The use of charmap (Character Map) is reliant on you having it installed on your computer.

May I say how much I enjoy reading your interesting and informative articles every week. There are two items which bother me at the moment and I would be grateful for your advice. When I want to get off the Internet I cancel the home page but am still connected there used to be a box pop up but this no longer appears. I have tried other routes but to no avail. All I can do is to turn the computer off or pull the plug out of the phone socket! My second query concerns a CD-ROM which I bought and contains a number of software items related to radio short wave scanners, frequencies, decoders etc. I can read the introduction which I guess is in DOS format as it is white on black and my mouse becomes inoperative. There are no instructions on how to get on to the programs.Thank you in anticipation of your help. All best wishes.

All versions of Microsoft Windows come with the option to ‘Auto-Disconnect’ set up by default – Basically when Windows detects that you are no longer using the Internet connection then it gives you the option to disconnect.Although a useful feature for those new to computing, many users may find it intrusive and so it does come with the option to de-activate it which is what I believe has happened to your machine.

To re-active this function, you should do the following – From the desktop, click on ‘Start’, ‘Settings’, ‘Control Panel’, ‘Internet Options’ and then click on ‘Connections’.If you now select the service provider you use for connecting to the Internet (e.g. Freeserve, Freeola etc.) by double clicking on them and then click ‘Properties’, ‘Dialling’ and highlight the tick box that reads ‘Disconnect when this connection may not be needed’.Simply then keep clicking okay until you return to the main screen; Obviously the wording of the instructions above may vary depending on the version of Windows you are using.

If you don’t want to re-enable this option then whenever you are connected to the Internet, you will find that there is a picture of two computers on the lower right hand side of your screen. If you double click on these and then select ‘Disconnect’ then the computer will come off the Internet.

In terms of your problem with the CD drive, the only thing I can recommend based on the information you have given me is to right click on the start button and select ‘Explore’ then look down the list on the left hand side of the window and look for your CD-Drive.Once you’ve found it, click on it once and a contents list for the CD will appear on the right hand side of the window then just have a look for any programs in this list which you think you should be able to run and double click on their icon to start them running.
