Last night my new best friend Wayne Rooney scored a fantastic two goals against Switzerland in what was an overly lacklustre match made slightly more interesting for me by the fact that I’d visited a few hours previously and placed a small bet on England winning the game.

Before anybody writes a letter to the editor claiming that I’m encouraging gambling I should say that personally I believe it can be a very bad habit but I don’t see the harm in placing the occasional bet that you can afford to lose for a bit of fun. Obviously the Internet is a good forum for online betting as you can research whatever it is that you are about to bet on, make the payment online and then if you get lucky you can collect your winnings online.

The Ladbrokes site stuck out for me as presently (offer expires 6pm this Saturday) they are offering to match any bet placed by a new online customer on Euro 2004, the US Open or Royal Ascot with a free bet token to the equivalent value up to a maximum of £30 to be used against a future game. I went online, placed a £30 bet on England beating Switzerland, won £45 back last night and then got myself a free £30 bet token which I can now use when we play Croatia on Monday.

In addition, there are areas on the site to bet on the Horses, Greyhounds, other football matches, the US Open, Rugby Union, Formula 1 and Wimbledon as well as many other sporting events and special selections such as politics betting. In terms of additional features, the site includes a betting calculator as well as live commentary for sporting events throughout the day.

Unsurprisingly Ladbrokes haven’t failed to cash in on the online casino business as you can also go online to play Poker, Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, the Slot Machines and so on. I must be honest when I say that I don’t quite understand the concept of an online casino as surely any fun of playing a Roulette table is taken away if you’re betting by yourself, at home on a Wednesday night? At least if I lose money in a real casino then I’ve still had a good night out because of the atmosphere but I can’t see how this would be replicated onto a computer screen.

Registration is fairly straight forward; you give Ladbrokes your name and address details, create a user name and password, agree to their terms of conditions, confirm you are over the age of 18 and then register a valid debit/credit card or arrange for funds to be directly deposited into your betting account.

Of course the site does have the obligatory ‘responsible gambling’ section which explains how to set daily/weekly deposit limits, self exclusions and how to keep control while gambling which points out the fairly obvious rules about not gambling money you don’t have and not to chase losses. To be honest if you even have to read this section of the site or feel the need to impose limits on your deposit amounts then you probably shouldn’t visit and leave gambling well along. This site as this is a resource that I’m recommending to responsible people over the age of 18 to visit for a quick flutter; the house always wins ultimately so betting should never be seen as a way of making money so if you’ve never gambled then stay away from this site or any betting shop! If however you already place bets down your local bookies then try them out online at even if it’s just to make use of the free offer betting token they are currently giving away.
